Where to Give

Where to Pay Your Zakat.

The Quran outlines exactly who should receive Zakat. Choosing the right channel ensures your obligation is fulfilled correctly and reaches those most in need.

The 8 Eligible Recipients of Zakat

Allah (SWT) specifies in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60) that Zakat is exclusively for eight categories. Distributing Zakat outside of these categories does not fulfill your obligation.

Al-Fuqara

The Poor

Those who do not have enough to meet their basic needs.

Al-Masakin

The Needy

Those who have some income but not enough to cover necessities.

Al-Amilina Alayha

Zakat Collectors

Those appointed to collect and distribute Zakat funds.

Al-Mu'allafatu Qulubuhum

New Muslims / Hearts to Reconcile

New converts or those whose hearts are inclined toward Islam.

Fir-Riqab

Freeing Captives

To free those in bondage or slavery.

Al-Gharimin

Those in Debt

People burdened by overwhelming debt they cannot repay.

Fi Sabilillah

In the Path of Allah

Those striving in the cause of Allah, including charitable projects.

Ibn as-Sabil

The Stranded Traveler

Travelers who are stranded and in need of financial help.

Where to Distribute Your Zakat

Scholars recommend prioritizing local distribution first — helping those in your own community. Here are the best channels:

Your Local Masjid

Many mosques have a dedicated Zakat committee that identifies eligible recipients in your community. This is the best way to ensure your Zakat stays local and benefits neighbors in need.

Established Islamic Charities

Organizations like Islamic Relief, National Zakat Foundation, and Penny Appeal have transparent, audited Zakat programs that ensure your money reaches verified recipients across the globe.

Directly to Individuals

You can give Zakat directly to someone you know is eligible. This is valid as long as the recipient falls within one of the eight categories. It is important to give with dignity and discretion.

Important Reminders

  • Zakat cannot be given to your direct dependents (parents, children, spouse).
  • Zakat cannot be used to build mosques, schools, or other infrastructure unless it benefits eligible recipients.
  • You should verify that the organization separates Zakat funds from general Sadaqah donations.
  • It is preferred to give Zakat locally first, then internationally if local needs are met.
